Extra Credit

You may only do 5 extra credit assignments per nine weeks

Number # 1, # 4, and # 5 can only be done once per school year

(1) Worth 2 Extra Credit Assignments: Write a letter to your representative in which you ask your representative to contend for a position about which you feel strongly. (Credit will be given when the representative responds.)

(2) Choose an issue from the newspaper (include a copy of the story) and compare it with the way a similar issue was dealt with in the past. What lesson from history can we apply to our handling of the story today?

(3) Generate questions for interviewing an older person about a significant historical event (e.g., Great Depression, WWII, Vietnam, Watergate, etc.) that he or she witnessed. Record your questions and the person's answers. Then, include a separate section in which you suggest some of the lessons that you learned from the experience. (Remember, some teachers at AHS can be a great resource for an interview)

(4) Worth 5 Extra Credit Assignments: Read the novel, "Yeager", by General Chuck Yeager & Leo Janos. Once completed take my test on the novel. If you score a 80% or better on the test, you will receive full credit.
(5) Worth 2 Extra Credit Assignments: Take the President's Quiz - You must come in to my room, sit down with a completely blank piece of paper in front of you, and list in order and with the correct dates of service all of the Presidents of the United States. You may use either dates of election or dates of inauguration -your choice. This is an all or nothing offer: every name and every date must be correct to earn full credit. If you try once and are unsuccessful, you can try one more time and that's it.
Credit will be awarded in the nine weeks in which you achieve this.

(6) Watch one of my hand-picked top 33 American history films.

  • (A) Afterwards, in your own words, summarize in detail the film's story and the message that the filmmaker was trying to convey.
  • (B) Then suggest specific evidence from the film that supports your claim.
  • (C) Finally, what is your opinion (What did you get from the story and characters? What did you like or dislike? What impressions did it make on you? Would you recommend this film to others? Why or Why not?)
