# 8 Martin Van Buren * Democratic, 1 term, "Old Kinderhook" *
Financial panic of 1837 and depression of 1837-1840 doomed my presidency. *
The term "O.K." is credited to Van Buren who was raised in Kinderhook,
New York. Van Buren became known as "Old Kinderhook." Soon people were
using the term O.K. referring to Van Buren and the word "okay"
was derived.
# 9 William Henry Harrison * Whig, 1 month, "Tippecanoe" *
Campaign slogan was "Tippecanoe and Tyler too". He served the shortest
presidency # 10 John Tyler * Whig, 1 term (minus 1 month)
* First vice president to assume office when the president died while in office. *
Presidents Tyler and Fillmore known by the nickname "His Accidency"
* He was the president with the most children-he had 15. * The tradition
of playing "Hail to the Chief" whenever a president appeared at a state
function was started by his second wife.
# 11 James K. Polk * Democratic, 1 term, "Young Hickory" *
The Mexican-American War occurred during his presidency * President Polk replaced
Zachary Taylor with Winfield Scott as commander of the forces in Mexico because
he saw Taylor as a potential rival in the 1848 election. However, Polk decided
later not to run and uphold his campaign promise of only one term * Fulfilled
all his campaign promises. Acquired California from MEX., settled the Oregon dispute,
lowered tariffs, established a sub-treasury, & retired from office after 1
term. # 12 Zachary Taylor * Whig, 1 term (16 months), "Old
Rough and Ready" * Served one year and four months of his term before
he died of cholera. * He received his nomination for presidency late because
he refused all postage due correspondences.

president. He ordered rigorous enforcement of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 *
Presidents Tyler and Fillmore known by the nickname "His Accidency"

Pierce * Democratic, 1 term * Two months before he took office, he
saw his eleven-year-old son killed in a train wrecked.

Upon the election of his successor, Buchanan sent Lincoln a note saying, "My
dear sir, if you are as happy on entering the White House as I on leaving, you
are a happy man indeed." .
